When people choose colours
for things they quite often
want to create harmony in
their surroundings. A white
lamp post, being a neutral
colour, will fit in with any
colour palette unobtrusively
and even if it’s background
scenery changes it will still fit
in. At a front door a
white
lamp post will have a fresh
appearance and will provide
extra security when opening
the door at night.
The fixtures most appropriate
for the location might be
determined by their height.
Some lights might be
arranged as single stand
alone pieces at driveway
entrances, centred on a lawn
or at a corner where the best
illumination can be achieved.
Others might be situated a
row of lights to
flank a
pathway and illuminate a
route. There are various
heights from waist, to
shoulder and taller that are
available.
Positioning of lighting needs to
take into consideration any
shrubs or trees that, although
currently at a convenient
height, might grow and
obscure the lantern, thus
detracting from its function
and its attractive appearance.
If you plan to include lighting
as part of your landscaping
remember that plants will
grow and will need to be
controlled to prevent
obstruction. Make sure you
consult your garden designer
if you plan to add lighting at a
later date to avoid disruption
and unnecessary replanting of
plants that may have
established themselves.
Whether the lantern casings
are dome shaped, up lighters
or traditional glass panes in
sets of four or six they need
to remain clear to ensure
their best function.
